Sambucus nigra 'Samyl'
This productive, commercial cultivar from Denmark has a vigorous, bushy habit that is similar to Samdal, but not as dense. Plants are partially self-fruitful, but planting two S. nigra cultivars will assure better fruit production for both.
Sambucus nigra is the official medicinal species used in Europe. The berries are extremely high in immune-boosting anthocyanins. You can use them in all of the same wonderful ways you would use the canadensis species.
Samyl is selected for juice production based on very high anthocyanin content and sweet flavor. Strong upright shoots yield dark glossy berries. Note that nigras produce on second-year wood—prune accordingly.
