Native American persimmon trees are extremely cold tolerant, growing in USDA zones 4 through 9. Site location for this deciduous fruit tree should include full sun to light shade, and it prefers well-drained soil. Once established, the persimmon is also drought tolerant. Common persimmon trees reach a height of 30 to 50 feet at maturity, with a spread of 20 to 35 feet; they produce a smaller fruit than the Japanese persimmon, which reaches a width of about two inches wide when ripe.
